And if you want your 3 Series and M3 to remain at the top of the game, then accept the rules of the game*. Or get a radical sports car (if your wallet allows it) with no room inside for your kids or your luggage.
I think you are missing the point (and I'm not an American teenager, to level-set). Ferrari just built a gorgeous, 3-door GT (the FF) which combines functionality with stunning good looks.

BMW has now built not one, but two cars that combine functionality with the *ss-end of a melted water buffalo.

The complaint is not so much BMW trying to fill every single niche on the planet, but doing so without a shred of good taste. If you have to make the car look like this in order for the functionality goals to be achieved, I've got a newsflash for you - YOU'VE MADE A POOR AUTOMOBILE.

So I tried to find some numbers on US sales but I couldn't find anything recent.

(From Autoblog) In 2011:

First 4 months, BMW only shipped 720 5-Series GT. Let's say that remains constant for the year, in 2011, they would only ship approx. 2,880 5er GT's. In 2010, they shipped a total of 2,848. Those numbers were WAY off what BMW was estimating, between 4,000-8,000 per year. On top of that, customers jumped from the 7-Series to the 5er GT. Not only did they severely miss the estimates with the F07, BMW also lost sales from their flagship 7-Series. From a NA standpoint, you can't twist that into a positive. You take yearly sales of the F07 and compare to one month of sales of a particular line, it's a very small percentage that it represents.

Now I'm not angry that BMW is continuing this, profit is profit, but the fact that numbers prove that it's not that big of a success added that there are no models like the 5-Series wagon is what I think is getting people angry. BMW is continuing to experiment with models that have a good chance to fail or disappoint, rather than giving us something would do exceptionally better if not on itself but compared to the GT.

The problem is the margin on those cars are less than their mainstream ones, due to the need for major incentives in order for them to get out of the showroom.
Plus it doesn't contribute much to the bottom line.

Good idea, and nice overall, but oddly, the details, which are often bmw's strong point, are a little odd. Side windows, the odd side vent and the front looks squashed in. Non M sport and a darker colour is way to go.

For us here the F07 is cannibilising sales from the F10 due to it's lower price point.
In ur case it's hurting their bottom line cos ppl are downgrading. In our case it's also hurting their bottom line cos ppl are upgrading FOC.

So people cannot voice their opinion? What kind of dictatorship country do you live in? BMW can continue to choose what it want to build and us the consumers, people paying your salary, can voice their opinion and vote with their pocket books.

Outstanding.
Vince Gilligan, or whoever is picking the cars in that show, obviously has a great (and sneaky) sense of humor regarding the cars people pick to drive.

But for God's sake, make 1 or 2 decent, light weight sports car. Enough with ugly, bloated crossovers, GT cars etc. Is the world coming to an end? Toyabaru is making what BMW should be making!
Fully agree, some say these weird mis births will grow on us and we'll learn to appreciate them. But that is all crap, it will be even worse after some years!! Some say it's for the new markets in Asia, well it's certainly not for N-USA nor W-Europe and I see some critical reactions from Asia also.

I guess that these days, the market is the world, and when you target 7 billion humans, you 'll find several tousands jumping on it, irrespective the sheer incompetence in design.

On top, you're completely right, when you shop BMW, you have a dozen options for heavy pig, but really NONE for nimble, light and ripped. The best option is the (fugly) M135i these days. Where is the world going to???

Probably better for commercials/photographs. Less driver or other interior bits to photoshop out.

It will be weird to see this car and the X4 side by side. Not really too much different, but if the renders are anything like accurate, the X4's proportions will be way better.

Also, I have to admit something. I'm not sure if I can come right out and say this.

But.

It's growing on me.

I have to go take a shower.

This car is ugly, yes, but that isn't what bothers me. I don't care about this car and would never buy it anyways. What bothers me is that it shows that something is very wrong in management at BMW, and these decisions are being made by the same people that are designing and approving the cars that I DO care about. That scares me.

I don't ever post on the site, but felt I should.

- The car isn't the worst thing ever, I even like the front end, rear, and the side vents don't bother me, although I would prefer the brushed metal to the black on my M.

-I am currently not an American teenager, although I was in the past.

-I think most of the angst toward this car is that it represents something that the enthusiast community does not want. That being said, some people may feel that its R&D/production cost may be keeping the models the do want from production or touching their shores.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR THOSE IN THE NA MARKET. I don't want to see that $hit being the thrown in the face of us in the NA market- I would love a M135i, a 535D, a 5 series touring, a 1 series diesel, a 335d or 335i touring, but I am not allowed to purchase any of those. We still have the E82 1er here. Now I'm all for BMW branching out into untapped markets, but I would also prefer if the leveled the playing field and gave the NA market some of the great models we've been missing out on for YEARS. I'd pay 44k for a M135i with some options BMW. If you won't let me buy it, somebody will eat your lunch- and soon. Mark my words.

I think BMWoA is largely to blame for the lack of models here North America, but I don't see giving half of your lineup to NA being sustainable for long. Those in Canada just get screwed by proxy.

end rant

correct, that's what bothers me also. When BMW mngt is allowing this massively underwhelming design (and heavy weight) for X1,3,5,6 and 5GT, F20 and 3GT now, what can we expect for what comes to us? I only see the gap with Audi, VW, Volvo and now even SEAT and SKODA shrinking fast.

BMW used to be a predictable car company we only made exciting cars for the enthusiast driver yet neglected the needs and demands from other customers for exciting cars to allow them to fullfill their daily requirements.

.................

As long as there are new niches to exploit and new markets to explore BMW will continue to expand on the opportunity to appeal to a global audience.
On the contrary, I think the one that is not listening is BMW. But as you said it yourself: "this is no longer about you".

By "us" I guess you mean the customers that were loyal for years to a brand that used to mean something special, right?

I'm not saying that BMW should only make M3's and M5's just to cater to the driving enthusiasts. That would be very stupid and very unprofitable. The problem is that BMW has betrayed their own roots just for the sake of profit and sales volume.

Things like putting an engine from a lower model into an M car (N54 into the fabulous 1M), changing the 3 series coupe name to 4 series just to charge more money, every model gaining size, weight and numbness compared to the previous one, building atrocities like the 3GT and 5GT, building FWD cars, etc... are things that the BMW I used to love would NEVER had done before.

Go ahead and fill every possible niche out there, but do it by sticking to the company's values, not by selling out.

So please let your company know that a lot of "us" will be going elsewhere when purchasing our next car. Good luck with the Chinese.

P.S. For those of you that haven't seen the pic below, it was a real BMW ad. No photoshopping was needed to make BMW look foolish. BTW, the sentence in the ad reads: "That's why we don't have front wheel drives".
