Angry Idiot on phone = kerb rash

Driving up a lane near Holmbury St. Mary at the weekend, quite narrow but enough for cars to pass. Woman in an Astra came round the bend ahead of me, way over on my side and at a fair old lick. By the time she reaches me I've managed to slow to about 10mph, but her wheels are still on my side of the central white lines. I had nowhere to go and clipped the kerb and she still managed to clip my wing mirror so I was inches from something more serious!! Meant to add that as she passed me I saw her right hand up to her ear so I'm pretty certain she was on the phone. Fortunately the damage to the mirror was a tiny scuff which has polished out, however the front n/side allow is a whole other matter Unfortunately the traffic following her and behind me, plus it being a narrow lane meant I couldn't turn round and catch the idiot or even get a number!

Always the way - you keep your pride & joy pristine and then some other sh1thead goes and messes it up for you. Be careful out there!

Not to worry Rob your not the only one! I nipped my alloy whilst turning into a narrow road the other day...it was a very painful experience I ve only done 500 miles and have no one to blame but myself...!!

That picture looks identical to the damage I've done to my alloys. First the left rear, then the right front both against the curb parking (at different times!). Ironically I was trying to get close to the curb to avoid the wing mirror being clipped on the other side by passing traffic.

Had my previous car 3 years and 22k miles without one scuff. Less than 500miles on the clock and one month: two damaged alloys.

Does anyone know whether the damage shown in the pic above can be repaired back to new? I wouldn't have thought so...?

Anyways, cars are meant to be used and are just material items which can be replaced. That's what i keep repeating to myself anyway...

Ouch! I really feel for you. Stupid moo diving like that. Glad no one was hurt. At least your wheel is a painted one and can be easily fixed.

That has got to be annoying Rob. I am obsessive about not damaging my wheels...

Hope you get a good repair sorted.

That's a bummer, I did the same on mine after 3 days of ownership. I bought a new alloy in the end, my OCD took over and as my alloys are diamond cut they would be a PITA to repair.

This is the first time in about 8 years that I've damaged an alloy but really gutted that someone else's thoughtless action caused it.

Have to decide now on how to get it fixed - basically want the wheel to look 'good as new'. The Wheel Specialist that dan mentioned looks interesting, only hassle is the nearest branch is about 30 miles away so there's the logistics. Alternative is my local dealer - they can provide a courtesy car or drop me back home and will store the car securely overnight if need be, but I wonder - can they make it look like new?

It will not be a complete refirb, they get a contractor to come over and he will make it look good in 2 hours or less, they guarantee it for 1 year, if like me you are not keeping the car get it done that way. If not it needs to go to a refurbishes this will take a week probably.

Take it to a BMW body shop. Don't cut corners.
Not much in the price difference between BMW & mobile repairers.
The only problem with BMW is that you have to leave the car with them for a day. You obviously haven't got a spare tyre to put on the car whilst the alloy is being repaired. Another disadvantage of run flats !

Was planning to keep the car for 3-4 years (although that may change when I see the new 4 Series )

The Wheel Specialist claim they can do a better job - this is a quote from their website...

"The Wheel Specialist offer a TOTAL all over, specialist refurbishment that mobile alloy wheel repair services cannot offer, for a similar price to what they will charge for a temporary, cosmetic, touch up job. The finishes at The Wheel Specialist give an all over coating and are tougher and longer lasting and will last you for years to come. Mobile services cannot prepare the wheel as thoroughly or strip off old coatings prior to refurbishment so it is impossible for a mobile to achieve the same finish as The Wheel Specialist. In most cases they don’t even remove the tyre, they just mask it off."

However... The Wheel Specialist still only guarantee their work for 12 months, same as BMW so it's really down to quality of work. What I don't want is a wheel that I can see has been repaired without looking too hard. Mate of mine had a wheel refurb'ed on his ML and it came back two shades darker... stuck out like a sore thumb.

My local BMW body shop do it themselves & the supplying dealer definitely refurbished alloys themselves.
I suppose you need to ask the body shop the question , do you actually refurbish the alloys in house or do you farm the work out.
I was given a BMW body shop written guarantee on the refurbishment of the alloys.
Don't forget BMW body shops are repairing BMW alloys all the time, & so are more likely to match the colour of your alloy.
At the end of the day, my experience with these sort of repairs is that , the quality of the repair depends on the calibre of the technician & the calibre of the body shop manager.

You can see the Black paint added inside the wheels.

Looks like they did a great job. Do you mind telling us how much they charged & did they balance the wheel as well ?
Thanks

I've got ALA Wheel Insurance. I cannot afford to not have use of the BMW once my GTI is sold. So, they'll have to fix my damaged alloy (if and when it happens) outside my house or my place of work. Thank goodness I've got painted ones. I am sure a smart repair will be just fine. If not I'll make them do it again and again!
