6MT Shifting from 1st to 2nd Under Pressure - Hitting the "notch"!

I'm not used the 6MT in my 328i Sport. When i'm accelerating in SPORT mode and shifting from 1st to 2nd under load, i'm hitting that damned R notch! It's so annoying! Any tips or am I just going to have to practice, practice, practice? My '02 Jeep Wrangler's 5MT was a lot easier to shift under pressure, as was my '03 Jetta! I remembering hearing in reviews that "if you like the BMW 6MT drive train, you'll like this one, but if not, you'll hate it". First bimmer so I guess i'm a little in shock that I keep hitting that damned notch!

Pull back on the the gear shift lever, not back and left. No need to ham fist it.

You can always try this...

Interesting, never had any issue with that no matter what car or what kind of driving I did. (sporty, granny style,...) and I think nearly all brands have the Rshift overthere nowadays.

Then again I only have an automatic if its a loaner.

Huh. I've driven a lot of BMW M/Ts and have never had that problem -- in fact, it can be quite difficult to get the car into reverse if equipped with a short shifter. Sounds like there might be something slightly 'off' with the gating? Yeah, don't be ham-fisted, but even if you are, you shouldn't be able to hit that notch.

go easy brother...

been driving 3 series manual transmission for over a decade now, and i've never had this issue..

from 1st, all you have to do is pull gear lever straight down, while maintaining a very light pressure to the left "wall"... no need to put so much pressure to the left as to fall into the R track...
