Security Coding

I've installed the Auto Watch Security Code System in both our BMWs. This is because lots of them, even some F30s and especially M Sports, are being nicked in London. The police have come around and sent mailshots regarding this. It seems BMWs and Range Rovers are the rage for this unwelcome attention.

One just has to key-in a 4 digit code and then the car is live. Without it, nothing works. A bit of a pain, but better to be safe than sorry.

Anyone else done this?

BMW should be making sure the cars are virtually unstealable rather than ultra easy as it is the E90s.

F30s are still being taken away for a permanent holiday to Eastern Europe. Just shows their popularity. Anyway, mine is more than secure now.

How are the F30's being stolen? If on the back of a truck then an extra immobiliser is not going to offer any more protection.

This.

I was told by a BMW mechanic/friend that the F series model don't have this same "new key coding" vulnerability that is currently afflicting the E series models?

You are right, the problem affecting older E9x cars is no threat to F30.

A few F30s have also been stolen. Not as many as the previous versions, but stolen just the same.

Speak to these guys if you need confirmation:
http://www.securemycar.co.uk/bmw-stolen.html

Anyway, one can never be too careful.

Oh, I also got a nice reduction from my Insurance Company.

Did you install this yourself?

I went to your link but there wasnt any in depth info about the product. If it is easy to install, doesn't this mean that it's easy to get around the immobiliser by mere definition?

Btw if this works, then i am relieved because i was seriously thinking of buying a steering lock!

The system does work.

I had it fitted professionally and fitting takes about 2 hours. Can't be bothered with steering locks which are easy to pick and ungainly.

You might also be interested to know that many, many cars in Israel, including F30 BMWs, have a similar system fitted for enhanced security. We know the Israelis are experts in this. If it is good enough for them, it is good enough for me.

I recall BMW confirming all Europe cars produced from July 2011 are unaffected by this unfettered access to their in car libraries.

And, I thought BMW already released an ECU software upgrade to address this issue for cars manufactured before 7/11.

Its not (yet) an issue for US and hopefully won't become one. I understand this type of access via OBD is restricted/locked on US cars. Maybe one thing they did right on this side of the pond.

Nowhere near in the same numbers and not flatbedded away either.

BTW, are your seat bases fine now?

I have no idea. You might have to ask the thieves this question.

Speak to these guys if you need confirmation. They told me that a handful of F30s had also suffered the same fate:
http://www.securemycar.co.uk/bmw-stolen.html

I did not use them to install my immobiliser.

Sorry I cannot elucidate any further.

My dealer coated the seat bases in their paint shop to be double sure. It also now seems some new cars are coming with a coated (interim fix) and a new component that has been properly protected.

Very impressed at the dealer and BMW gesture of goodwill

That's great news. Your seat bases were a terrible mess and they had no choice but provide a fix. It's also good you had a decent dealer to support you. I wish I did.

Unfortunately, I was not so lucky with a goodwill gesture from BMW. It would only cost them 170+VAT to sort all the baggy leather seats.

Now we can both start really enjoying our respective cars. Love driving mine.

My fault

That you did kind sir and luckily it came to pass.

The start of the relationship was awful. One key fob not working, baggy leather seats, the supposidly standard rear bumper colour mismatch for EBII and dealing with BMW UK and one of its unhelpful dealers here in London.
