328xi GT vs. 335xi GT - which would you prefer?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
If you have a couple of criteria for the GT, which would you choose?
The 328xi vs. 335xi ?

1) Cost - 328xi is around $47K - $50K vs. 335xi is around $50-$55K
2) Speed - 328xi = 5.9 - 6.0 secs 0-60mph vs 335xi = 5.1 - 5.2 sec 0-60mph
3) MPG - 328xi = 32-33 MPG highway vs. 335xi = 29 - 30 MPG highway
4) 4-Wheel drive - Both cars have it
5) Options - would you prefer a more fully loaded options on the 328xi (like M-Sports) for the same budget as a less-loaded 335xi (no M-Sports) and give up around 0.8 seconds speed ?

Right now, this is the only BMW I'd like to have.
I've had a 2007 328xi coupe before which was a great design, but traded it for a 2012 Audi S5.
My 2006 Audi A6 Avant is getting old. Been looking at the new Audi allroad, but the backseat is small as it is built on the A4 Avant frame. So I feel the 3 series GT is it for me - bigger rear space + bigger luggage space = better utility. And it looks much better than the 5 series GT.

What $60K ????? I could configure the 335xi GT for less than $51K (including Navigation, Heated seats, xenon (included in base price of $46K). Look below - I cut and paste from the configurator. If I add the M-Sports at $3.7K, that would be around $55K. And that includes the $925 destination charge too. (I don't need Leather, since the synthetic leather actually last longer and needs less maintenance).

TwinPower Turbo, 3.0-liter, inline
6-cylinder
xDrive, intelligent all-wheel drive

My 335i xDrive Gran Turismo Base MSRP $46,850
Mineral Grey Metallic $550
Black SensaTec $0
Dark Burl Walnut wood trim $0
Advanced Real-Time Traffic
Information $0
BMW Apps $0
BMW Online $0
Enhanced USB and Bluetooth plus
Smartphone Integration $0
Heated front seats $500
Instrument cluster with extended
contents $0
Navigation system with touchpad $2,150
Remote Services $0
Highlight trim finishers pearl gloss
chrome
$0
Destination & Handling $925

Total MSRP $50,975

Based on test driving the new N20 on a wagon a few months back, I would take the 335 for the 6 cylinder engine.
The 4 cylinder engine is not as smooth and silky as the old 6 cylinder of the prior generation of 328.

I noticed you cannot get the 19 inch wheels (on M Sport package) when configuring the 328.

Is the 328 engine the same as the 528 engine ? I assume so.

Two years ago, I tested the BMW 528 with the 4-cylinder and BMW 535 with the 6 banger, and I honestly thought the 528 was smooth and if I went with a 5 series, I'd go with the 528. The 535 was just a little faster than the 528, but not by a big margin.

Test drive the sedans in two engine variants. Coming from 328i RWD sedan, I was not impressed by the N20 on the new 328i. Granted accerelation is good n smooth but It is marginal even when you are solo rider. Load the car up with 4 passengers and some luggage and it will feel different to drive.

I also felt the power delivery was no immediate when at 30-35 mph and suddenly accelerating switching to a faster lane.

Test drive has your answer. With GT I would go N55 if you want same smoothness as your outgoing 328i E90.

I had the 335xi GT optioned to cost 53k (ED invoice) and pick up was confirmed for 9/17. Wife wasn't very happy about a 3 series costing more than a 5 series. We went to the dealer to check out both F30 and F10 interior and made our mind to cancel the F34 and ordered a F10 535i instead. The 5 series also has more incentive (1k loyalty vs 500 for 3 series).

It's not that I haven't thought about it. The F10 IMO looks awesome and the interior is certainly a step up from the F30/F34 (it should be, as it is one segment up).

But at this time I wouldn't want to get another sedan as the family car. It will cost more than the f34, while being less practicable, heavier and therefore slower. And it doesn't have this unique character, in fact is now becoming almost as common as the X5 in my neighborhood. If it fits your needs though in the end you really can't go wrong with a 5 series BMW if you can afford it.

LOL. As Spock would say 'illogical, but I'm not human'. I guess this is why I went with the Audi S5 when I could have gotten an A5.

For about the same price, I might just get a 335xi GT without the Navigation, and the price won't be far from a 328xi with Navigation ($2K) and Xenon lights ($900). The 335xi GT already includes Xenons as standard lights.

Yep we both have a coupe now so anything with 4 doors will make our life easier for our new child. F34 will definitely be very unique and that was why we wanted it in the first place. I just wish the options wouldn't cost so much ($10k+)!

I didn't know the options were any cheaper on a 5 series. Outie, sorry you won't be a member of the 3GT club.

Cyber888, go with the 335. Just get it opt out with navi, HK & m brake. The rest u can add it later like m sport package, wheel, steering wheel & etc. but the three opt I mention above are better to be installed by BMW factories, just my 2 cent.

BTW, never live in colder climate, do you really need the heated seat?, just wear thicker under wear!

Heated seats is a must or I'll freeze to death in winter below zero. LOL. HK is not a priority as my wife truly hates any form of loud noise inside the cabin. So, it's heated seats over HK sounds. My previous 328xi stock audio was good enough.

The torquey little N20 is a nice engine, but the N55's growl is part of the appeal of BMW for me. YMMV

would go for a fully loaded Msport 328 xi then taking a basic 335 xi (unless u r a track guy) but then if u r then i would wait for the m3 sedan or m4 coupe. talking about mpg on petrol engine is just cause diesel is the only way to go in this case. petrol heads like me and maybe u ... dont care about mpg

I finally saw 2 GTs at the dealer. They were all 328s, no 335s. The rear leg room space are huge! When folded, the trunk space is as huge as SUVs like a Jeep or an A6 Avant. One was $49K and the other was $51K loaded.
