Recommendations on what to buy and what to avoid

Hi everyone!
So my car is currently on a ship and finally coming my way. So far, I've put down a deposit but haven't really filled out other paperwork for my recent lease. So when the car gets here and I'm on cloud 9, I really don't want any surprises from the dealer.

What things should I consider and avoid when we sit down to fill out paperwork and sign papers? Tire package insurance, wear and tear, ??????? Any help is appreciated as this is my first lease ever! Let the count down begin!

Don't buy anything

Of course, some will come and say that you should buy the tire package insurance, and it will pay for itself 2x over.

My opinion is that all of the add-ons are to 1.) make money and 2.) provide you ease of mind. If my car has a good amount of warranty issues after the first 3 years, I'll consider getting the extended warranty at that time. Other than that, nothing on my end.

I'd second the don't-buy-anything advice. None looked worth much, in contrast to the options one can select when ordering. The only one that tempted me also was the extended warranty, and I think that can be ordered in a few years, as zeezz said. Although, as always, insurance is worth more to those who flog the car, which is not me.

I agree. Though, can you confirm that you can purchase the extended warranty after the fact? I believe you can, but want to confirm.

Thanks!

I was told I could purchase extended warranty after a few years but it costs more the older the car is/more mileage it has. If you plan keep it for 6-7 years, buy it up front. If you don't think you will keep it longer than the base warranty, I wouldn't bother. And someone can correct me if I'm wrong but can't 2nd party extended warranty be bought cheaper than factory extended warranty in the US? Geico or someone like that?

I also ordered and placed my deposit on my car which I leased. Did not opt for any extra warrantys. I have the wheel and tire warranty on my E90 though. No surprises from the dealer thankfully.

Since he's leasing I don't know why you'd be recommending him buy an extended warranty now? If he decides to buy the car after the lease is over he could buy the extended warranty then.

I think the tire and wheel insurance is a waste of money. It's expensive and you need to read the small print if you continue entertaining the idea.

Since you're in Michigan the BMW/WeatherTech mats are a must. Touch up paint. BMW carbon fibre license plate holders- nice finishing touch and helps prevent them from bending.

Www.herringtoncatolog.com has nice car accessories. I always buy their trash bag that fits on the back of the car seat. Tire pressure gauge. Roadster Duster. Cell cup holder. There's lots of other nice items, too.

I had tire and wheel insurance on my Mercedes and it was well worth it, replaced 4 AMG rims and 4 tires over 3 years for my 1000 bucks. BUT, they got stricter towards the end and I had 2 bent rims and a bubble in 1 tire that they wouldn't cover.

More importably, BMW's policy is way more expensive ($1600 for my 18" ///M wheels). So I decided not to get it on my F30.

Another important thing about that is if you put any larger wheels on it than what came on it, after market or BMW, they're not covered.

The ext warranty is cheaper to buy now since you won't need it for 4 years. If you put a time value of money on it the ext warranty price now compared to 4 years from now is not much of a difference.

You can always extend the factory warranty up until the original warranty expires.

If you are 100% sure you are keeping the car long term you may consider it now so you can finance it versus writing a check later. If there any doubts, or you are leasing, deal with it later.

The add-ons are where the dealership gouges you. Skip all of them.

Keep in mind that all add-ons are negotiable when you are in the F&I office. I was able to negotiate my wheel and tire protection down drastically for the 19" wheels. I had this on my last lease and replaced 3 RFT with no questions asked.

Thanks everyone! Huge help. Like bmwlvr60 said, I'm leasing so probably will not buy ext warranty. It also sounds like the tire/wheel package isn't worth it either. I'll be sure to post pics when I finally get it, although its been so long it seems unrealistic.

I would advise to get the tire and rim warranty: my e90 needed new fronts halfway through the lease which cost $750: when you return the car if you have the original tires you are going to pay at least what the insurance costs for new tires. Hit a couple potholes and damage the tires and rims and you will be well over the insurance cost. I thought it an absurd add on with my first BMW, would not get another one without it.

For a lease, skip it all.

If you buy, as I did, consider the extended warranty and/or maintenance extension - they are about $4000 retail (depending on dealer), but are worth the peace of mind on a new model...

If I was buying a e90 body style (like 2012 M3 or 335is), I probably would only buy the warranty extension and skip the maintenance plan.

Does anyone know how much of a differential it is to purchase the extended warranty now versus when your factory warranty is up?

I would prefer to pay cash for the extended. Since I am putting a good chunk down, I would have to finance it. Would probably pick it up in year 2 if the differential is nominal.

The price list I saw for the extended warranty did not pro-rate for mileage at the time of transaction. Best to opt for this at either 47 months or 49k miles, whichever comes first. It used to be you couldn't opt in after warranty expiration, now I've heard they will take your money only more of it.
I don't opt for extented maintenance.
I bought the extended for my 02. At 70k they had to replace something that was jamming the gear shift. They had to drop the tranny for that operation. I figured that paid for the extended on the next two cars.

Can anyone chip in on the windshield replacement insurance? I have the tech package with heads-up and I've heard that these windshields are more expensive to replace. I drive a whole lot (in Houston) and have had three cracked windshields within the past 4 years so I'm thinking of going for it but I'd love to hear some advice from my Bimmer community!
