Why the MPPK airbox is not an intake

I see a lot of people with the MPPK saying they have an intake. Sure, its an intake, but not a performance one. Know why? Because of the filter. Its a double filter (paper and carbon, glued together) and is restrictive as hell. Making the motor breathe through this is not gonna make power. At least put in a K&N before you claim that the MPPK intake is better than the stock one, because they both use the same crappy filter and they both suck. BMW has been using these double filters on their motors since they started using turbos, and they're the worst thing in the world for performance.

I hope this clarifies things.

EDIT: Oh yeah. Replacement is K&N P/N 33-2997. MRP is $51.99, so thats probably as cheap as you'll find it.

either way you will have to change this CAI and filter before you add a decent engine boost such as stage 2 Dinan. Check their thread. This BMW intake is crap.

Thats weird. Is it a BMW/Mahle filter? If anything I would think it would be more useful in the desert to keep sand from clogging the paper. Unless it clogs up and air can't get to the paper.

I'd like to know what the difference is. My car is an M-Sport, and this is what they gave me, even with the MPPK. Part number is 137818616909, which is the only one shown for the F34 for 2015.

Same here. M Sport with MPPK and the filter is the same as the one OP posted.

Yikes. That's what I get for assuming that the filter at least promoted something resembling airflow when I upgraded to the MPPK. K&N is en route and interested to see if there is any noticeable difference. If nothing else, I will feel better driving knowing I am not purposefully restricting the airflow as much.

I'm running an aFe intake. Thats why the box was off the car. Sound is so much better that I don't think I'm ever going back to the stock box. You can hear the turbo spinning up and blowing off boost, which is part of the fun of having a turbo car.

Power? No idea. I have 430 miles on the car. Have never been beyond half throttle.

Wish I knew the difference. Doesn't really matter all that much. NFW would I use some 1950's tech filter. Years ago I read a thread where the poster was complaining about scored cylinder walls. IIRC he was going on and on about poor BMW engineering. I asked if he used a K&N type filter. He ignore me but answered all other questions. I took that as a yes.

For my car ('15 435)
13718616909 - M-sport
13717602643 - non M-sport

I've been using K&N type filters for years. Have never had a problem with them. I'll continue to run them until theres something better out there. Theres no way I'm making my motor breathe through paper or foam. Zero performance aspirations in them.

Its all about surface area vs required air flow. A big filter can be made tighter than a smaller one & not restrict air flow. To lazy to bother, not running the 435, but there is math to determine required CFM airflow for the engine & digging into filter specs could give you their CFM ratings.

Since guys have run 11.8 & I have run 12.1 with the stock filters I would think in most cases they are not restrictive under 400whp+.

If you want intake sound aftermarket is the way to go.

I thought the reason there was the carbon particle secondary filter is for emissions only. When you shut the car down there is always gasses that escape backwards out the the induction path and whit the carbon the hazardous particles are kept in there till the next time you start the engine and burned off. Can someone who knows explain the purpose for this. Most used to just cut the permanent filter out of the air box but now it looks like it is changed each tile you replace the filter. I am sure you can find them with the "non carbon" option

+1, curious to hear your impressions. May consider picking up an AFe as well for my MPPK.

The open one. Magnum Force Stage 2, PN 51-12202. Have their little scoop too, but I'm gonna have to do some work to make it fit my F34.

Love the sound, the motor seems to want to rev to the moon in Sport, but I can't let it yet (only 675 miles, not broken in. Soon).

Ive been debating what intake to get, BMS, AFE open, AFE closed, or wait and see if DINAN develops a intake for the f30... Its kind od sad BMW doesnt have a legit upgraded intake for the MPPK. Im planing on getting the MPPK, just want to break my car in, Just hit 600 miles today
