320i or 328i owners - your feedback pleeeeze!!

All you 320i (or 328i) guys - how do you find the car.? My 320D is going to be replaced but I really don't want that diesel noise back!!!! So thinking of the petrol now. I believe the engine is a bit clappy/noisy but I assume you can't hear that in the cabin? And mpg - over 30?

Driving my 328i for the last 6 months which had 10k km on it (executive demo) when I bought it, so past its break-in.

Course on start-up, it sounds like a diesel thanks to the direct injection. However once it gets warmed up, it's smooth but not as silky as a 6 cylinder. Still quick on its feet! Also sounds slightly coarse given its a 4 cylinder.

As far as mileage goes, check out my fuelly page - https://www.fuelly.com/driver/timbits93/328xi

Given it's mostly city driven, other than the odd highway drive and the cold weather lately, I'm pretty impressed with the mileage. Least it's way better than the G35 it replaced! - https://www.fuelly.com/driver/timbits93/g35

I was getting about 25mpg in a 428i, I think thats about 21 US mpg, but it was on loan so I did thrash it a bit, and mostly town traffic

I am averaging 34.9 mpg at 1300 mile mark. Mostly high way. 320i is much quieter than 320d as well. As long as you don't mind losing the pow end torque. However there is still plenty of usable torque below 2k rpm on the 320i

328 for Sure. Equally equipped price difference is less than $1k or so. Engine is basically the same but you et more out of it.

Regardless of what a lot of people claim regarding fuel economy varying depending on your engine size I have experienced that with the same driving style, difference is almost non-existent. (Keeping the same fuel type, of course). Will a 2.0 get better mileage as a 3.0? Of course. Same goes to same-sized engines but tuned differently. The main difference is with one you get more power and therefore you had more consumption. But if driven back to back In the same real-life driving conditions and style you'll get about the same mileage. Reason being we use fuel to move some cylinders to move the car as the aftermath of some engineering greatness. Energy is energy, the more you get via mechanical advantage the less fuel you need. So if you do not max out your throttle, and manage both cars to speed up and cruise and brake the same, they'll burn almost the same fuel.

I have a 328i.

Gas mileage is great. On the highway Ill get on the high end 30's if I'm driving like a normal human being (and not a reckless animal that this car deserves, and sometimes makes me become). The car is quick on its feet from the turbo charged engine, and definitely a joy to drive.

The only thing I hate about the car is the engine noise. Idk about the 13's or 14's, but you CAN hear it inside the car. Yes, it might not be loud, but when its quiet, for example when you're stopped at a traffic light, you can definitely hear the engine running and it sounds very much like a diesel. If you're standing outside the car then its definitely noticable. Anyone that i've come across that has heard the engine has always asked me if it was a diesel, and i hate that sound..

Otherwise all is great

I have a 320i and it gets anywhere from 680-770km per 60 litre tank. Keep in mind that's winter driving which means 1) heater on, 2) heated seats on, 3) rear defrost on, 4) heated steering wheel used from time to time, and 5) higher rolling resistance snow tires. When cold (< -5C), the car does not use stop start (lower mileage). When it warms to over -3C the car starts to use stop start again (better mileage). I use 91 Octane in the car, which here in Canada basically means 0% ethanol for selected petrol stations (e.g. Shell). The ethanol note is important. I've noticed no ethanol means slightly better mileage.

The car is very quiet from inside the cabin. The ride is firm. Handling and performance are both top notch.

I've driven the 328i on numerous occasions and the two cars are quite similar for most driving occasions. When pushed though, the extra power of the 328 is noticeable and a few extra goodies come standard with 328i here in Canada. I might have chosen it but for the fact that there were no rear-drives available.

My preference was the rear-drive, sport edition. The seats are just awesome in sport and rear drive comes with M-Sport tuned suspension. The X-Drive, at least here, does not and must be ordered separately. Although if you're looking at saving fuel, skip all-wheel drive.

You could opt to lease as well. If you hated it, you'll know in 3-4 years it won't be your problem.
