320d MPG

I have a 320d Luxury auto and the best MPG I seem to be able to achieve (according to the computer) is an average of 43-45mpg. I do a mix of town driving with a few longer runs in between. The car takes a long time to get up to full operating temeperature so maybe this is the reason for poor fuel economy?

I had an e90 320i se (pre ED model) and on similar runs I was getting 35mpg + so from a diesel I was expecting at least 50mpg

Not sure whether I need to go and get this checked out or whether this is normal?

Sounds about what I would expect, without driving to save fuel

The temperature gauge is engine oil temp, not water, so expected to take much longer. Diesels also run cooler, so again would take more time than your petrol. Not to worry though, a Diesel needs much less enrichment than a Petrol to run smooth cold.

Diesels also require a different driving style to Petrols to achieve best results, although as you have an auto, that helps bridge the gap....but if you are doing a fair amount of Stop/start driving, then your figures are probably about right. Give her a long steady run and report back

If its put in perspective I have a 120d e82 auto that has done 35k since new. Until the recent battery slow death I had not reset the fuel computer for about 30k miles.

It showed as 36mpg. However when I first got it i drove from my office to canary wharf in silly fuel save right foot mode, its about 45 miles and i achieved well over 60mpg average.

Garage List
I'm averaging in the mid 51s from brim to brim calculations or mid 54s according to the OBC. I probably do about 30-40% urban driving then the rest is on the motorway at 70ish. I used to use EcoPro a lot but saw no major difference to when I just left it in Comfort

I drive in sport suspension/steering normal gearbox all the time.
44 MPG constant now, plenty of blasts in the 330D M Sport.
Going to get a big shock in the M5

I get about the same as the OP for my daily commute (23 miles each way, half town, half dual carriageway).

On a longer run of mostly m'way/duals I get around 56mpg.

Good enough for me, as my previous Merc SLK petrol did 24mpg, and I used to be filling that every week. Now I fill up once every 18 days on average, in a car with a 13 litre smaller tank.
Even with the price difference between petrol & diesel, I'm paying nearly 20 less per tank and running nearly 3 times longer than in the SLK.

Very happy

Well the round trip was 163 miles, shame about the road works on the M8 and the fact it snowed on the way down, dissapointed that I could not sit at 80 for longer than 2 minuets.. On the way back Bloody cup final traffic leaving edinburgh slowed me down as well. Still over all OBC 55 mpg and buy the fill up 53mpg true, not bad..

My 320d has done ~5k and is on ~50mpg (brim to brim calcs and OBC within 1pmg).

Normal run to work is mixed town and dual carriageway and I aim for 55mpg average each day!

Sounds like the 320 does about high 50 average and the 330 about 40-45 average. Sounds about right (claimed - 10)...

bizarrely the 2 320d luxury data points seem about 5mpg lower than the others... maybe luxury = less frugal?

the latter I'm thinking - autos are supposed to give better mpg, right?

43-44mpg for me. My round trip is about 10 miles a day so no chance I'm getting the car up to temp. Occasionally do a long drive and have got close to 55mpg.

I drive in sport mode 99% of the time.

Sounds something like to me. In my e87 116d I get around 45-48 with a 30 main commute to work with a mix of a roads and motorway. One thing to bear in mind is that cold temperatures really effect diesel engines. Any thing below 5 degrees and its normal to see 10 - 15% reduction in economy. All of these are reasons why I have gone back to petrol in the shape of a 320i. No tractor noise, power throughout the rev range and still it should return decent economy, and with petrol being cheaper than diesel then I reckon running costs won't be too far off for me over 12000 miles a year. And that's neglecting the initial purchase price.

It is true that the 320i is a cheaper car to buy in the first place.

As for the rest...

Sorry to thread jack, but how are you finding the 320i? By the sounds of it you sound satisfied with it?
