Chief of BMW Sales, Ian Robertson, has shared that the company has approximately 100,000 reservations worldwide for test drives of the soon to be debuted BMW i3 electric car. However, some of those interested apparently don't even need test drives to be convinced as there are also already a "significant numbers of deposits" for the i3.

With this amount of interest already, Robertson goes on to say that "We are confident that with the i3 and i8 we will shift the [customer demand] needle because we will shape some of this technology" in the EV sector. Robertson said the i3 differs from many of the EVs on the road today because it was developed as an EV from the start, rather than being conventional car with an electric powertrain dropped in.

The all-electric i3 will feature a body weight of approximately 1250kg / 2755lb, and will cover 0-62mph in approximately 7.2sec and 37-75mph in 6.0sec. Top speed will be limited to around 93mph to protect the charge of the battery. There will also be a range-extended hybrid model available.

Expect to see the production BMW i3 unveiled in September at the Frankfurt Auto Show, with sales beginning not too long after.

I'm waiting for the day when you can get the same number of miles on one charge as you would on a tank of gas. Then i'll be sold on this whole EV movement

This thing will sell like crazy in cities, like London, with limited parking and a congestion charge

we are almost there! Tesla S is pretty close considering its performance and mileage on a full charge compared to a 550i or 650i.

We need the German's to push the US and Asian car makers on their electrics which are all pretty much crap.

I agree, why did they have to make the i3 look like a futuristic Prius? why not make it look more like a 3 series? or even the 3GT if they were going for the space aspect of it. Maybe that is reserved for the i4 and i5

The actual usable performance of the Tesla S is on par with the M5/M6. We're definitely getting "there"

Actually i MIGHT be sold when electric cars can be "recharged" to max range as quickly as I can refuel my ICE car.

Sort of like pulling into a gas station after a few hundred miles, hitting the head, buying a water and stretching your legs. If so, Tesla has that and is quickly expanding it to cover the entire country:
http://www.teslamotors.com/supercharger

Did I mention that it's free? Does BMW buy you gas?

For road trips, this is really pretty cool. For regular charging of your car, why not just plug it in overnight, you know, that time your ICE car is just sitting there, doing nothing.

I don't want to drive an egg. If I did, I'd buy a SMART car.

There is no point in designing an EV which looks like a 3er.
The long hood would be a waste of space, so the i3 looks just right.

if i3 though ugly has some cool design aspects like the 2 tone colors, the tail lights and how clean and refreshing the front of the car is. i hate hatchbacks but a mini porsche panomera ev would be a dream car

Ask the guy who has to keep going to another lot to charge his car session after session at the track.

You will never drive a tesla on the track as hard as possible for 30 minute session after session after session as you can an m5/6. Battery will just die. I have personally seen this a few times already.

Have you seen Top Gear take the tesla coupe (whatever its called) on their track? Couldnt even finish one lap.

Max power numbers are nice but useless if you cant use it.

Frankly 2800 pounds is really no feat for a car this tiny. I mean a ferrari weighs 3100 pounds and is a full on car. This was designed from the ground up with cf in mind and yet still weighs this much. I know batteries are ridiculously expensive.

I honestly think EV are not the answer but rather it will be an electrically modified improvement on the internal combustion engine that remains the powerplant for true performance cars.

Like the electrically controlled valves and getting rid of the camshafts and all the parasitic losses that offer. Controlling power steering, fuel pump, water pump via alternator which charges with the regenerative braking technology already employed and a KERs types system which allows a peak power using less of the gas burning engine and instead supplements it with stored energy.

I could see easily getting an M performance engine to 40 mpg with this technology and a non-m car doing 50 mpg. They also would have ranges longer than current gas engined cars as the KErs and such would allow peak power application without needing full relience on the gas engine
