Does it also work with manual transmission or is it just an auto feature?

Your right and left foot do the work in a manual

I hope it's just that simple for the M4 as well. Less steps and very simple which was a complaint for many. Good stuff

I would expect the M4 is slightly different and more like the M5/M6 setup, where you hold the DCT lever forwards, foot to the floor then let the lever go. Naturally, more buttons will need to be pressed beforehand.

Launch control? In a pure automatic trans with a torque converter? Really? BMW's marketting team has been doing a great job fooling everyone with this transmission.

Someone please explain how this is "launch control" in any way. This is no different than loading the stall in any automatic and releasing the brake with traction-control on. Every automatic car in the U.S. has "launch control" by this definition.

This does make me wonder too, but certainly one feature of LC is self regulation of RPM when your foot is on the floor. If you did this without LC, you'll just spin up, burnout, redline, blow the car apart etc...

Especially when you're talking 28i, 30d, 35d, 35i...

No, you won't. How do you think anyone has ever launched a traditional automatic since...forever. Real launch control systems do not use the brakes to hold the car stationary, regardless of transmission type.

If I go out to my 328i, put my foot on the brake and FLOOR the throttle, I'll just get major wheelspin and f**k my rear tyres in seconds. I'd probably also get many funny looks from my neighbours.

If I put my foot on the brake, REGULATE the throttle (i.e. rev to 2000rpm) then let go, it'll practically result in Launch Control.

Therefore, LC on the 2014 models just makes the process easier. The driver can FLOOR the throttle, but LC will REGULATE it and not just take you straight to the redline.
