How Big is Yours?

F30 registered Oct 2012, now showing 23,000 miles. 4000 miles to first service!

F30 registered March 2013. 19,500 miles and showing 2,500 to first service - how odd that they're different.

OK I don't know if there's something wrong with mine. When I first got it, it said 19000 miles to the next service. Now I've done 2700 miles, it says 14000 miles. Somewhere along the way I've lost 2000 miles.

Mine said 19k when I first got it too. Though after 1k miles it now says 18k so at least I haven't lost any mileage.

I guess how its driven could lose/gain you mileage?

Nowt wrong with it, sounds like you are driving it hard .
It's condition based servicing and works out itself when a service is needed.

And mine. So it can't be conditioned based when mine had 10 miles on the clock and showed 19k until service when delivered. It hadn't been driven!!,

Guess diesels need servicing more than petrols.

Not necessarily.

It is condition based, but shorter journeys will reduce the miles to service. All my miles are high speed long distance. If I changed to lots of short or stop start journeys my 4000 miles may be 2000.

As a reference, under exactly the same conditions my previous 330d did 22k to first service.

My 320d was showing 19k when I colllected it with 850 miles on the clock. When I had a dealer software update mine reset again to 19k from 24.5k. The loaner 1 series I had the other week with 4 miles on the clock also showed 19k.

Maybe 19k is the base line mileage and depending on the vehicle use it adjusts from there.

I also had 19k untill the service was due. Now done 7.5k, with service due in another 10k.

I have noticed in another thread, with our america cousins that MY14 F30's are to be serviced at 10k. Anybody know why ?
I presume it's the same engines & oil though.

It's an American thing. They seem to have a culture of more frequent oil changes. No bad thing I guess and you can't argue with them about it because they are equally incredulous that we'd let a vehicle go 2 years or 20k+ without changing the oil.

I've had mine since 15th of January and it's done 3800miles next service in 26000miles used every day but very short trips like school run/shopping/gym/work(3 miles from my house) less then 500miles in total on motorways. I don't think doing short trips effects the sevice interval too much

This is true. In the US they queue up for oil changes like we do for a car wash. I suspect they don't use top quality synthetic oil like we do though.

Re America's obsession with frequent oil changes: Part of it may be the culture, as someone noted. Another may be the fact that gas/diesel fuel quality in the US is not up to euro standards, particularly with respect to sulfur content.

The synthetic oils spec'd by the factory for use in BMW's and VW's are identical, as far as I know, to the ones in Europe - - with one possible exception: I think euro gas BMW's can use the lower SAPS engine oils rated BMW LL04 - - due to the lower euro sulfur content. Not supposed to use LL04 in BMW gassers here. That aspect may result in a difference between the BMW High Po 5w30 oil in the US and its counterpart in Europe.

Mid June 2012 - 33,000mls. First service was at 26,000mls. Probably only a couple thousand miles off new tyres.

Although i'm also in favour of frequent serivces, i think 10k to 15k should really be the service intervals. I understand regarding the quality grades of oil now, in new engines make servicing less frequent. My last motor was an 2011 Audi A3, that was done at every 10k.
For America though, these motors are mainly built in Germany or South Africa. Don't they use top quality oil at the factory or is if different for the cars sold on the North American market ? Seems a bit strange to me.

Thanks for that. Never thought about the sulphur content in the fuel.
