Lightbulb Upcoming BMW model pipeline - from F16 to G12 (B58 engine to succeed N55)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Some of you may remember me from the crazy bmw.com-sourced pre-prod info dump in early 2013. I found another source. It's very limited this time: just the model, engine, and transmission type, and lists not only the models that are guaranteed to come, but also all those that BMW considered as a possibility (for example, the list includes both RWD and xDrive, manual and auto US F31s). The list is exhaustive as of:

February 2014

(if a rumored vehicle is not on the list, it probably didn't exist as a finished engineering project at that time).

This post is updated every few months, with fresh info added and the officially announced vehicles removed.

FAQ:
Can you tell me when these models are coming out?
- Yes, see latest update.

Can you tell me which of these models will come to market, and which ones we'll never see?
- No.

What options will be available on these cars?
- No clue.

Can you tell me where you found this info?
- No.

This is just the US market, EU is simply too varied to type in all combinations.

--------------------------------------
12/31/13 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

This is based on December information.

BMW is going to significantly expand their plug-in hybrid offerings, utilizing something that looks like a completely new powertrain. The following cars are listed now:

F45 223e SAT xDrive, manual and auto. There's a new engine code, XB2 1.49 M0. No idea what it is.
G11/G12 740e/740Le RWD, auto, engine XB1 1.99 O0
F30, 328e RWD, manual and auto, XB1 1.99 M0

New versions of the cars listed previously (again, this is US specific):

G11/G12 750i/750Li, RWD, auto
F48 X1 28i FWD, B46B20O0, manual and auto

New car:

F57 Mini Cooper Convertible, same models as F56 above.

--------------------------------------
3/1/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

Just one new model, but a pretty interesting one:

- X4 M40i, N55B30T0, manual and auto

--------------------------------------
3/2/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

- BMW M2, N55B30T0, manual and auto

(Yes, same engine as X4 M40i, so I'm guessing 350-360hp?)

--------------------------------------
3/9/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

The following list provides better future visibility, but should be taken with a grain of salt: its reliability hasn't been tested. I believe it's best to consider this as "BMW's best laid plans". Also, no transmission information is available. Again, this is US only data. PM if you need EU data. Confirmed or disproven info is marked accordingly.

F16 - 07/19
F25 - 07/17
F26 - 07/18

--------------------------------------
5/5/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

Production dates for M2:

EU/UK: 11/15 through 10/18
US: 3/16 through 10/18

Change of plans in regard to US 320i: it is possible the LCI will continue with N20.

--------------------------------------
5/24/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

I'm seeing more evidence that US 320i will not get the new B48 engine at LCI. So, F30 re-engine for the U.S. looks as follows:

320i - never
328i - MY2017
335i - MY2016

--------------------------------------
6/24/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

Production dates for X4 M40i: SOP 12/15, EOP 3/18.

--------------------------------------
7/4/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

Independence Day Special!

All re-engined F3x models will get new designations:

4-cyl B48 engine will have 330i/430i designation instead of 328i/428i
6-cyl B58 engine will have 340i/440i designation instead of 335i/435i.
PHEV F30 will come as 330e, not 328e.

I hope to have more detail on this development later.

--------------------------------------
7/4/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

They just keep on comin':

Same designation changes I first announced for the F3x will apply to F2x, so we're going to get 230i and M240i.
B48 engine for the 430i models appears to have been pushed back to from March to July 2016 SOP.
US G11/12 will have one diesel model, 735d (B57D30O0 engine, to be sold as 730d in ROW - shouldn't be a surprise really). Top of the range will be the 760i, using N74B66U1, an updated version of the engine currently found in RR Ghost and Wraith.

And, finally:

M4 GTS!

(Please don't ask questions - the fact that it exists is all I know.)

--------------------------------------
9/3/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

There'll be a FWD 1-series, including U.S. models. Model code F52, will belong to the same family as F45 2AT and F48 X1. U.S. will get 120i and 125i (the latter with available xDrive). This is all I know for now. Please don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger.

F47 X2 will come to the U.S. as 25i with sdrive and xdrive.

The complete family of BMW FWD vehicles at the moment looks as follows:
- F45 hatchback
- F46 MPV (not for the U.S.)
- F47 X2
- F48 X1
- F49 X1 LWB (China only?)
- F52 1 series something or other

A few things to expect in the G11/G12 7 series:
- LED lights standard with laser optional
- B&W audio
- Advanced parking assist
- Most optional wheel styles will be bi-color (I'm guessing similar to i cars?)
- Next gen drive assist
- Wifi hotspot

--------------------------------------
10/23/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

This is a sad one: BMW has caught up with me once again. Granted, it took them over a year this time, not three weeks like in early 2013, but from now on I will not be able to post as much good info as I've been able to. There will still be some interesting bits and pieces, but they will be nowhere close to what you've come to expect of this thread. For that, I apologize.

--------------------------------------
11/06/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

Well, G30 is finally here! USA is getting 530i, 540i, 550i, and 540d. Currently, only xDrive versions of 540d and 550i are listed for the U.S., but that may change - plenty of time for that. Can't say anything about the engines: like I mentioned before, my source is more limited now. But I won't be surprised if the gas engines are the same we already know about from the next 3- and 7-series, and the 540d is the new B57.

Also, there's F60 Mini Countryman on the horizon. Regular and S versions, FWD and AWD.

Update on new 7 series options:

- i8 style display keyfob
- selective headlight beam (I'm sure everyone expected that)
- active steering still there for the clueless
- new climate related options: "heating comfort" and "ambient air" packages
- automatic parking with remote control
- touchscreen (confirming what was suggested by the recent spyshots)
- new drive assist is called "active comfort drive"
- gesture control (feel free to guess what this one might do)
- rear passenger oriented options will provide heated/massaged/ventilated lounge chairs and online entertainment
- wireless charging for phones

F30 options that are new for LCI:
- LED headlights and foglights
- selective headlight beam
- BMW Individual is being considered for F30
- New touchscreen system from 7 series is unlikely at this time

--------------------------------------
12/12/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

Here's the list of newly created options you will likely see in BMW cars 1-2 years from now. It's unknown, which specific cars will have them. Wheel styles, colors, lines, and trims have been omitted.

5AS BMW laser lights
2VS active comfort drive with camera
6U9 BMW touch command
5AV active guard
407 panorama glass roof "sky lounge"
6WD wifi hotspot
3DS BMW display key
3KA acoustic comfort windows
4HB heat comfort package, front
4HC heat comfort package
443 LED flashing warning light blue/yellow
4VC inductive charging
4VD preparation, inductive charging
4F5 executive lounge rear console
4FH climate comfort seats
6FR rear entertainment experience
5A1 side view assist
4HA seat heating, front and rear
5DM parking assistant (working name)
5DN parking assistant plus (working name)
5H1 range extender (working name)
6NP USA telephony
4F4 executive lounge seating
3CL welcome light carpet
6AG e-drive services
6U8 BMW gesture control
3CM leather engine cover

--------------------------------------
12/15/14 UPDATE
--------------------------------------

I feel I've been ignoring our European readers, so here's a bit of info for them regarding F20 LCI.

With LCI, the following options will become available:
- LED headlights
- LED foglights
- Active cruise control

Interesting bits on the F46 2-series MPV will be:
- 3rd row seats
- traffic jam assistant
- M Sport (why the hell not, right?)

For our U.S. readers, F48 X1 will have three lines: xLine, Sport Line, M Sport. Some of the available options:
- Active suspension
- Active cruise control
- LED headlights
- 17" wheels standard, 18" optional

I'm surprised that they decided to use almost the same engine for the new x5m/x6m. Sad that bmw m can't make a new engine for every new body style anymore. Also by auto, does that mean dct or just a regular automatic or both? It seems like both but just want to be 100 percent.

It's not the same engine exactly. E70 X5M uses the O0 revision, F10 M5 uses T0, and F85/F86 will come with T2, so I would expect about 10hp/10lbs bump. This is in line with F15 using the same engines as E70, benefiting instead from lighter weight and improved drivetrain. And it's been the norm for a very long time now for BMW to use the same engine with minor variations in many different models.

No idea what kind of transmission will be there - the source doesn't specify that.

I've just found the September copy of the same data and edited the original post.

Added:
- F30 LCI
- F48 (new X1)
- F54
- G11/G12
- F15 X5 28i engine (ridiculous, in my opinion)
- F45 220i

And something close to the final confirmation that some US F31 and F34 RWD versions that existed in development are not making it to production (basically, whoever's been waiting for non-sedan RWD 3 series to come to the US - my advice is to give up).

F20 LCI (not listed here since it's EU only) and F30 LCI give us a good view into BMW's plans for the transition to B-series engines. It seems that, for a given displacement, the higher-output versions of the current engines will continue, while their lower-output versions will be replaced. So, for F30 LCI we'll have 320i with B48 and 335i with B58, but 328i will continue with N20/26. F20 M135i, having the higher output version of N55, will continue with it (just like N20 125i and N13 118i), while most other F20s will transition to B37/B38/B47. Based on G11/12, there's also no 8-cylinder engine in B-series lineup yet, so N63 is also staying.

F48 X1 is confirmed to be FWD (US is xDrive only, but EU will get FWD).

There's a whole new range of new production code designations for F06/12/13, I'm not clear what this is about yet.

This one is actually more interesting than I thought. It's the xDrive40E model. N20 motor with "40e" designation seems to suggest that the F15 will be a deeper hybrid with a larger electric motor than the existing ActiveHybrid models.

One more thing I only noticed just now: there's no model type reservation for US market F31 LCI RWD. This is the final nail in the coffin for our hopes to get a RWD wagon.

The X1 is outselling the F31 by a considerable margin. The new X1 arrives around the same time as the LCI F31. Expect a shift in priorities.

Should this make me happy? Shift of priorities from RWD wagons to FWD tall CUV? Is this a Toyota forum?

The current X1, on the other hand, is a brilliant car. Its only problem is it's much smaller on the inside than F31.

Ynguldyn, thanks for this interesting post.

Can you distinguish the 435GC according to the data? If yes, does it look like it will also get the N55 engine vs B58?

I just saw that you in fact listed F36, not F32, which would mean the GC would get the N55 also according to your list.

Exactly why we bought the X1 over the F31. The current 3er is too large for our desires. A 2GC would go a long way towards making me want another BMW.

And the X1 is RWD and cost approx $15k less, once optionned. What a surprise that it sells in larger volumes, its a bargain (or more precisely, the F31 is a robbery, that's why I don't currently own one). Now if the next X1 is FW, what makes it better than the CX5 or any random japanese thing with the "premium" package is not very clear. Meanwhile the F31 is expected to remain priced to not-sale.

Interesting F30 LCI will be one of the first real tastes of the longitudinal applications for the new modular 0.5l cylinder engine design if the chart can be believed.

We bought an f34 instead of f31 for more space and the n55. Not surprising if the RWD option is being dropped, most people want to never think about breaking traction. Though it is possible to break traction in our xDrive f34, you have to try pretty hard

+1 BMW doesn't want the F31 to sell well. They want people buying the more profitable X3.

B48 engine in the 320i? Will this be a ~200 hp engine? Do we know anything about the B-series engines yet?

Starting with the NAIAS will be the World Premiere of the BMW M3 and M4 Coupe and the BMW 2er Coupe.

For Geneva in March we will see the launch of the BMW 4er Gran Coupe and the first FWD BMW the 2er Active Tourer.

Leipzig will also introduce another European model.

A new Concept car will be unveiled in April prior to the Beijing Auto show this years destination for the Auto China event.

The villa d'este will see an example of further design collaboration.

Making its premiere in one of its largest markets will be the all new BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe at the Moscow Auto show in August.

Can you distinguish the 435GC according to the data? If yes, does it look like it will also get the N55 engine vs B58?
What engine is the B58?

It's the same engine as the recently unveiled F56 Mini Cooper S, 189bhp/207lb-ft.

Two new M-models likely means F82 M4 Cabrio and F85 X5M.

X6M LCI came out last year.
