So the 335d xDrive DOES have launch control
Well it's been a long week in the car. Only 7 days old and it's already past 1500 miles.
Had to drop some camera equipment off with a client this morning for filming car testing. They had a VBOX and an off-road facility and I had officially passed my run-in period so it seemed silly not to.... Firstly we tried some running starts to assess whether to leave transmission in sport or shift ourselves. Sport was shifting at around 4,5k revs. Manually holding onto over 5k didn't seem to really improve things so decided to leave in Sport. As I do need to keep my car until around 90k, I had no wish to do repeated launch mode starts but I had to try at least one. Into Sport +, gearbox over to the left, foot flat on the brake and then prod accelerator. Flag appears on HUD saying Launch mode activated. Foot off brake and away we go. Times were as follows - 10mph 0.66 s 20mph 1.23 s 30mph 1.90 s 40mph 2.64 s 50mph 3.54 s 60mph 4.64 s 70mph 5.99 s 80mph 7.55 s 90mph 9.50 s 100mph 11.77 s I did a couple of runs with same settings but without launch, just holding the brake and loading to 2k and fastest I got on 4 runs was 5.05s to 60. All figures were with just me and about 3/4 tank of fuel. Still can't find the coasting mode though... but I've averaged 41.7mpg since buying the car (including these runs). Astonishing.

I stopped when I saw 100mph but the VBOX recorded it at 13.23 @ 96.4mph (as I was slowing down).

Yes, it wont handle no where near as well as an M3, but straight line.... interesting. In fact your 30-70 is 4.09s which demonstrates the xdrive doesn't appear to be hampering mid range progress at all. And the 30-70 figure takes the launch control out of the equation. Very impressive for a car that's not completely run in yet too. Last edited by dopper99; 09-07-2013 at 05:32 PM.. |

I'm going to do same test on public road up to 80mph in the wet as will be interesting to see difference (have arranged to borrow VBOX). I still think that our two cars will be so closely matched as to pale into insignificance! As I said to you personally, for playing I'd choose yours without question. But I have to consolidate down to just one car and as an all-rounder, it's just incredible (even if I'd like to 'personalise' the suspension )

Oh, and should add to all this. Car was filled up with standard (edited) ESSO so nothing rocket fuelled.

Amazing. Thanks for doing this, that's damn quick for any car but a diesel?
What did you do different to not enable launch control on the other tests? Not prod the accelerator as much? |

Yup! Just held brake as I pressed throttle up to 2k. I will try a 0-60 with just prodding throttle as I really don't think it will make a huge difference. I also don't think it will make any difference if it's pissing down

I've been trying to get my hands on a VBOX. Also thought about the BMW event at Santa Pod next weekend (not a drag racing fan, but 1/4 mile is a great benchmark), but I'm off on hols. |

Did exactly as above, gear stick over to sport, two presses to get to Sport+, foot hard on brake and then floor the accelator...no flag, just what feels like a fully powered engine trying to smash the transmission to pieces! I've watched both the console display and HUD, definitely no flag. Engine is at normal temperature and I never try it twice in a row, a good half hour between tries. I don't want to keep trying it if there's some reason it won't activate, I could be just damaging the car. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong? |

Guessing it depends on what settings you've got for sport+. I believe in BMW's video of this on the 4 series they show the first thing as turning off the DSC. So a long press on that.
My guess is gtsussex has DSC disabled on Sport+ and you've got it enabled or is that not even possible to change? Still not got mine Then gear over to sport, foot on brake and floor accelerator to get the flag up. |

Yes, watch this video and do everything in the order shown.
I've not tried it yet on mine as its not run in. ie Press DSC switch Push gear lever to the left Press brake Throttle to the floor (which appear to enable the launch control) Let go of the brake Last edited by dopper99; 11-17-2013 at 08:52 AM.. |

BTW, can LC be coded for an older (11 months young!) F30 330d M Sport?
