Where is the battery in an F31 Touring?

Long story short, it's under the tool tray, where the towing eye and little mini repair kit is. I googled and found sweet FA when it came to where the damn thing was and how to get at it. Apparently no one with a touring has had any trouble finding their battery and it's all just me. I'm not some mechanical genius so, yeah...

Chances are you want the battery to disconnect the negative terminal. You'll need a small socket and driver and the screwdriver in the repair kit.

Because you have a touring (good morrow to you sir, fine gentleman that you are), your boot is a palatial, extravagant abode, as opposed to the rotted boards covered in straw that our sedan siblings get. This means you have to get a load of trim out of the way.

First take out all the storage system stuff, nets bars etc. if it locks into the floor or attaches to it, get it out.

Next lift out the two storage panels. Do the big one first, then lift the little one away from you till the curved hinges on either side slide out. You should be able to see the toolkit.

Look at the picture below. You're welcome. Now pick a spot and pull the trim away, you can pry the bastard pins off with a screwdriver, or use some fancy tool if you have it. Be sure to get all the pins (I didn't label all of them) and the screw things you can get off with the base of the screwdriver handle. The storage system hole thing just pops off.

Here's another picture. Bam.

Unscrew the screw on the negative terminal. Use the socket, it's tricky to get to otherwise. Do not unscrew it all the way off. The screw will fall out and it will go somewhere so hard to get you'll curse your ancestors for bequeathing you poor literacy genes.

Gently pry off the terminal clip thing and put something non-conductive between it and battery post so they don't touch.

Hehe, the green cable is the emergency opener for the gas cap.

Learn something new everyday. So if my car's battery dies and I run out of fuel at the same time, I pull this handle, while I'm replacing the battery that would also open the fuel cap. Why does this exist?

There is a lot of stuff in there.... I do wonder if the NRMA battery people would know where to look ... That being said, the dude who (years ago) knew exactly where the battery was under the back seat of my girlfriends beetle... I had no idea where it was in the death capsule....

I guess this is why my (soon to arrive) connected drive monitors battery voltage... apparently!!

I guess that's probably confusing if you're new to BMWs, but its not specific to the f31. I think almost every single model, past and previous, has had the battery in that location.

Hi Ilovewagons: I have been struggling to figure how to remove the trim panel covering the battery on my F31, mainly due to the chrome "adaptive retainer fixing pin" to which you refer as the storage bar locking hole thing! To be clear, you just yank the trim piece up and it releases off of the storage system hole thing? I have not been able to find anything about this apart from your post. I would appreciate any advice you could provide. Thanks.
