BMW Group U.S. Reports February 2014 Sales

03.03.2014

BMW brand sales up 3.3 percent
MINI brand sales down 42.8 percent
BMW Motorcycle sales up 11 percent

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – March 3, 2014… The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported February sales of 24,476 vehicles, a decrease of 4.4 percent from the 25,613 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, the BMW Group (BMW and MINI combined) is down 1.2 percent on sales of 45,272 in the first two months of 2014 compared to 45,808 in the same period in 2013.

“The ferocious February winter in much of the country no doubt increased the desire for BMW SAV’s, but in keeping others away from the showrooms it is also building up future demand,” said BMW of North America President and CEO, Ludwig Willisch. “The expanding range of BMW models, as seen during the Sochi Olympics, especially the new 4 Series Convertible and Gran Coupe, the new 2 Series, and the soon to arrive all-electric BMW i3, are among the good reasons to look forward to Spring.”

BMW Brand Sales
Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 3.3 percent in February for a total of 22,017 compared to 21,311 vehicles sold in February, 2013. Year-to-date, the BMW brand is up 6.5 percent on sales of 40,270 compared to 37,824 sold in the first two months of 2013.

In February, best performing vehicles included the BMW X1, up 57.2 percent to 2,329 vehicles, and the BMW X3, up 51.8 percent to 3,301 vehicles.

BMW Pre-Owned Vehicles
In February, sales of BMW used vehicles (including certified pre-owned and pre-owned) increased 10.4 percent to 14,956 vehicles compared to the 13,544 vehicles sold in February, 2013. Year-to-date, the BMW brand is up 8.3 percent on sales of 29,099 compared to 26,866 sold in the first two months of 2013.

MINI Brand Sales
For February, MINI USA reports 2,459 automobiles, a decrease of 42.8 percent from the 4,302 sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, MINI sales in the U.S. are down 37.3 percent on volume of 5,002 compared to 7,984 in the first two months of 2013. MINI USA is currently in transition from the current hardtop to the new model arriving in the second quarter.

MINI Pre-Owned Vehicles
In February, MINI used automobiles (including MINI NEXT certified pre-owned and pre-owned) reported sales of 1,875 automobiles, an increase of 18.4 percent from the 1,583 sold in February, 2013. Year-to-date, MINI sales in the U.S. are up 20.2 percent on volume of 3,756 compared to 3,125 in the first two months of 2013.

that x3 number shows how much it has grown in size and meets the needs for people now. the x5/6 is just becoming too big and expensive to justify

I can't believe how few 1/2 series sell in this region. They must sell much better in small car markets like Europe and Asia.

I guess thinking about it, it does make sense. I've yet to see either one on the road where I live. I do see plenty of 3/5 series and X3/X5s though and this data seems to support that.

Yeah this was mentioned in last months sales report thread. New generation X5 sales were down then too, but some members said they were hard to find. But that isn't the case anymore. My local dealer has 27 of them sitting on lots.

You'd think with such numbers for the X5, that they would have carried over the Drive Credit to March...

Mix is worse than last year too as higher participation of low margin products such as the X1 and 3 series were more than offset by lower sales of higher margin vehicles such as the X5, 7 and 6 series :

That is a good point. Concerning to see the redesigned X5 performing so poorly. Not surprising given the exterior can't be called nice if you know what I mean...

The x3 had much deeper discount as opposed to the x5. Partly because x5 is lacking inventory and also x3 new model is coming next year.

At our local dealership, x3s were given away where as x5 with little or no discount.

It's also winter time in North America, people will tend not to buy coupes and such with the weather being cold and miserable.

X5 Facts:
Jan : X3 made appx 13k ; X5 made appx 11K
Feb X3 production 12,892: X5 made 12,200

I would think that increasing production of X5's is a better indicator of success/failure of X5 than focusing solely US sales. Also, the X5 commands a much higher price outside NA. Now price is also affected by taxes. Bottom line is production volumes are increasing. Of course, it would be safe to assume that generally production equates to sales.

Little do those numbers tell you is that demand absolutely obliterated supply. The SC plant was working over capacity and even cut down on X3 and X6 production to help with the demand. Furthermore, the plant was trying so hard to meet demand that it started running out of parts. My order bank for the first 3 months couldn't be filled and at one point I had at least 15 people who had submitted an order but BMW could not give me an allocation spot to fill it. This scenario was pretty much at every dealer. To say that the X5 has been performing poorly is absurd. Please take it from me, who works for BMW. It was the total opposite. And yes, the fact that the X5's do sell for more profit overseas is part of the reason why BMW could not meet USA demand is because BMW was trying to capitalize on the overseas market when the new X5 launched and sending as many as possible over. Then when supply met demand overseas, more supply back to the USA market.

Yup, they ran out of 20" wheels, rear cameras, still no Nappa for Canada. I was fortunate to get mine in November, as my dealer was nice. Some play games with customers without allocations. I also had to sign a form to pay $20k if I exported my F15 within a year.

Yeah, we at BMW have a very strict export policy and it's not tolerated as fines, suspensions, and even revoking of dealer licenses are handed out.
