Are they suggesting we drive with 2 year old maps? See if you can get clarification on what they expect us to do in the meantime and where we could get up to date UK related info.

Nice work allachie9, thanks for sharing your findings.

I don't see how OTA updates will work. The 2015-1 map updates are 14 GB. That’s a huge amount of cellular data. It took me 8 hours to get the files via a torrent on a desktop with a fast connection. How could a 3G cellular connection ever complete this update?

My dealer owes me a free update as part of my deal when I bought the car and I can't get my F34 past 2013-2 because if you go to the official update site, it says there is no update.

I'm just going to bite the bullet and pay my $50 for now because this whole update thing is a major "donkey dung" show. It should be DIY and it should be free since we already paid $2000 for something that costs $100 at best buy.
Charging for updates on new cars is so 1997.

Agree, enjoying the new maps which have their own faults anyway... the new roads approaching Heathrow airport Terminal 2 for example are out of date...

The maps that you are "updating" are actually full versions of the maps. You're replacing the maps on your current system with the new versions. Since BMW is paying for the data on connected drive they will figure out a way to update the maps instead of replacing them.

If you code your car you can actually generate your own FSC code instead of purchasing one. I ended up purchasing a few FSC codes and was able to get the price down to $40. Ask your friends if they want their maps updated and save yourself a couple bucks. $40 is a steal compared to what the dealership wants to charge you.

This forum's user, Dracon helped me with the code for the 2014-2 map and I would recommend him if you need a code quick

Since BMW seem to release updates of the maps every year, DIY can save you some $€s in the long term... I bring the info here in case any F34 owner want to try.

All the instructions and software links needed are nicely consolidated in this guide here. (Time to say thank you to kitster, Dracon and shawnsheridan for all the info they share)

You will need a cable which I got from Amazon but you can find it on eBay too (key words are: ENET BMW F-series).

You will also need a 64GB USB drive.

Downloading the parts needed will depend on your broadband speeds but installing the software to the laptop (mine has Windows 8.1 32bits) was easy and took me some 45mins. Then the part where you link the laptop to the car took approx 30 mins (reading the instructions twice making sure you click the right thing) - all you do here is read+save a .fsc file from the car, you don't make any change to the car/system at all.

This .fsc file is then used to generate the update code and, if you save your .fsc file, you can use it to generate codes for future map releases - you wont have to connect the laptop to the car again. This step is quick and you do it already disconnected from the car.

Then you connect the USB stick to the car, it automatically asks for the update code and the maps start to upload after you input the code - the update took around 45 mins and you are able to drive/use the satnav while the files are transferred.

Thanks for the update.
I picked my new 335i GT up in November and it was running version 2015-4.
Early in the new year I noticed it had updated (OTA) to version 2016-1. I didn't notice any interruption to the service, so I've no idea when it actually updated, or how long it took.
I'll keep an eye on it and see when it updates to the newest version 2016-2,
and let you know.

Just updated my maps to version 16-2 from 15-1. I verified with a BMW "genius" that it would not be updated OTA on my 2015 328 GT, only some 2016 models will get that apparently. I was not prepared to pay BMW $200 for this, so
I did it myself by purchasing the download instructions and FSC number from bmwnavigation.net. The cost was $54.99. You basically just download the updates onto a USB stick, and you can update.

European maps NEXT 2017-2 now available. FINALLY!

It was late when I tried last night, looks like this update will need a bigger 64GB stick...
