Hey everyone,

Hey everyone,
I’m wrapping up an N20 engine swap on my 2014 F30 and I’m hitting a massive electrical wall. When I connect the negative battery terminal in the trunk, the car exhibits a very specific set of symptoms, and I have two major wiring questions regarding the engine harness.

The Exact Symptoms:

The Battery Hookup: The moment the negative terminal touches the battery post, the instrument cluster automatically turns on for exactly 2 seconds, displays "Not Available," and then completely drops dead.

The Start Button: Pressing the Start/Stop button does absolutely nothing to the dash. No ignition wake-up, no crank.

What WORKS (Stays Powered On): The center iDrive display screen powers up and stays on. The electric side mirrors work, the climate control panel stays functional, and the rear taillights work.

What is DEAD: The dash goes dead after a couple seconds following battery connection, the headlights do not work, the key fob commands do not work, and the OBD2 port has zero communication (cannot ping the DME or get a scanner to read).

Harness Question 1: The Terminal Hooked to the DME Top Bracket
I currently have a heavy-gauge cable with a thick, insulated black rubber boot bolted down right to the top bracket of the DME / intake manifold area. This line splits off the main harness crossing the firewall.

The Question: Is this supposed to be installed here?

Harness Question 2: The 2-Pin Yellow/Brown Pigtail (2DC51N)
There is a small, 2-pin pigtail wire with a green weather seal that has a production tag reading 2DC51N.
The Question: Where does this line physically plug in on the engine? Ive looked everywhere and verified knock sensors are connected, tank vent connector, numerous other connectors that might use this 2 pin style connector.
I've attached photos showing the exact location of that black-booted terminal sitting on top of my DME and the pigtail with a 2 pin connector (Brown wire and Yellow wire). The picture of me pointing to the connector on the DME is where that bundle starts that later branches off below the manifold to the pigtail with the connector I can't find a home for. If anyone has mapped this specific harness during a swap or recognizes this exact partial-blackout state, I would appreciate any insight!

Looking at the pictures of the seats I can not tell if its just the lighting playing tricks on me or if theres actually a color difference between the beige tones. Does anyone know if there is a difference in color of the beige. Also can one install LCI seats into a Pre-LCI F30? Thanks!

Been looking around everywhere and cant seem to find out what is causing this. I have a 2012 f30 328i that I got for $200. Previous owner skipped timing on intake side by 2 teeth, spun a rod, and destroyed the oil pump chain/guide. I have since replaced timing chain/guides and oil pump chain/guides, as well as changing the bearings (Clearances were still within spec) and all the suspension, tires and bushings (to include all the gaskets and tty bolts associated with the jobs done).

The car does run (with a moderate misfire) and only shows codes 1f0515 and 133104. I read around here and on Facebook and people said to try and replace part 12637591534. I did and still have the same issue, I checked the power distribution box and I have power on all the fuses, I also checked power at the wiring to the valvetronic actuator and I do have voltage to it as well... anyone experience this issue before and can shed some insight into this?

Hey Everybody—

My son's 2013 328i is leaking oil pretty badly, particularly when tilted uphill in the driveway. I got up under it and first scrutinized the drain plug (new one at last oil change), then removed the undertray to look further. I cleaned off the filth and could then see a rivulet run down the rubber piece up against the transmission just aft of the oil pan, as you can see in the pics. Both bolts up in that area I could clean off, but would then get oil on them again quickly. Pics are all looking upward from the passenger side, with front of car to the right.

From my limited knowledge and research, looks like it could possibly be the oil pan/gasket...? I was initially thinking rear main seal perhaps, but that seems less common, and hopefully it isn't that. Can any of you confirm whether this might be the pan or something else? Might I do any further looking or picture-taking to shed more light? Greatly appreciate any assessment and advice!

Thx, Fred

Hi everyone,

I'm installing an aftermarket ambient lighting kit in my BMW F36 2017 LCI with NBT. The kit includes a CAN/controller module and has 4 loose wires that need to be inserted into the BMW connector:

White
Orange
Blue
Brown

From my research and the installation guide, I believe:

Brown = Ground
Blue = +12V Power
White = Ignition/Control signal
Orange = Illumination/Control signal

On my BMW connector I can identify:

Brown
Red/Blue
Blue/Brown
White
Violet
Green
Gray
Purple and other wires

I do NOT have an obvious Violet/White or Gray/Red wire as shown in some BMW wiring charts.

Can anyone with an F30/F32/F36 NBT ambient lighting retrofit confirm which BMW wires the 4 aftermarket wires should connect to?

Specifically:

Brown aftermarket → ?
Blue aftermarket → ?
White aftermarket → ?
Orange aftermarket → ?

I've attached photos of my connector and the installation instructions.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Long story short, I isolated the problem to be a coil pack. I happened to have new Bosch 0221504470 in my garage, and while it’s not the specified Bosch replacement (which would be Bosch 12138616153), it’s the same size and has the same physical specs. I popped it in and the engine ran perfectly. Took it for a drive, no problem, no error codes.

Is there any reason *not* to continue using this coil pack? Thanks!

So first thing i had damaged FEM which needed replacement and coding, i had 2 keys, one i was using everyday and other one never. After replacement, coding and conversion, the guy who was doing all this work told me that there's a problem with one key. I don't exactly know what did he mean by that, but i picked up the car and both keys, and everything was fine. But after some time i can tell that the first key i was using before is not opening/closing the car, and the second one works, but without keyless feature. I went to the shop that works with keys and they checked that the keys are working on 315mHz, and the car after conversion should read at 435mHz. But here's my question, if its only the frequency missmatch then why one key works and other one not? And what about the keyless feature?

I have a weird problem and I can't really find a reason for it. Usually, when letting of gas I can hear a weird, metalic friction sound or how do I call it. I have changed rear brakes recently, so it shouldn't be it (the sound is completely identical to the one pre brake replacement).

The problem is also that it does not always happen. Some days it's completely silent (so harder for mechanic to find a reason - usually "I haven't noticed any noise"), some days it's noticeable even on acceleration. Also, for some reason, it's mostly noticeable on 2nd gear.

Car: 335i 2014 RWD M Sport Automatic. To be honest I have this problem for almost a year and it seems like it does not affect the way the car drives. But it does sound like I'm driving a completely clapped car and this bothers me lol
Does anyone know what it might be or experienced same issue in the past?

Yes the air filter is clean. no codes or limp mode, I used the autozone scanner. 155,000 miles. Plugs and coils replaced around 100k

Here’s the part where you’re gonna hate me. It’s been doing it for about 3 years and probably 30k miles.

Do I just throw plugs and coils in it as a cheap starting point even tho there’s no misfire codes?

I have a 2013 328i sedan, rear wheel drive, N20 engine, 101,800 miles. Current issues:
1) Edited: Per BMW dealership, "oil leak from oil housing filter." It has not required oil to be added since the BMW dealership informed me about this over a year ago, 5/25.
2) The timing chain has not been replaced. Edited to add: Carmax said there is "an unidentified engine noise," but what the noise is, timing chain or otherwise, has not been identified.
3) Getting awfully close to needing 4 new run-flat tires.
4) Will need a 4-wheel alignment once the tires are replaced.

Having the work done at a dealership will cost way more than the car is worth. The small indie shop I have used can not do the timing chain (Montgomery County, MD). Should I continue to pursue looking for an indie shop to evaluate and quote repairs needed, or is it time to let it go?

Carvana offered $3900.

Hello!

I have a 2018 BMW F30 330e that will not enter sleep mode and draining the battery.

The vehicle otherwise operates normally. All buttons, controls, and functions work correctly while the vehicle is in use.

The problem occurs after the vehicle is switched off. The gear selector illumination remains on, the start/stop button stays illuminated, and the headlight switch remains lit. I can hear relays activating approximately every 20 to 60 seconds. The relays that cycle include the fan relay, coolant distribution unit, instrument cluster, and several other relays. It appears that the vehicle is repeatedly waking up instead of going to sleep.

The vehicle draws approximately 10 amps when parked. If I remove the fuse for the iDrive/radio system, the current draw drops to around 5–6 amps, but the wake-up cycle and the fault remain.

Testing has been performed with all doors closed and locked, the key far away from the vehicle, and no activity around the car. The vehicle has no aftermarket equipment installed, including no aftermarket audio system. The vehicle is not equipped with Comfort Access door handles.

The vehicle previously had a broken wire to the coolant pump, but this has been repaired.

The following has already been tested or replaced:

Replaced the 12V battery and registered it to the vehicle.
Replaced bad ground wires underneath the vehicle.
Updated the vehicle software.
Removed fuses from both the front and rear fuse boxes.
Disconnected the following modules and components:
KOMBI (instrument cluster)
ICM
REM
IBS sensors (front and rear)
Airbag module (ACSM)
Gear selector
Charge flap
Fan relay
Coolant pump
Coolant distribution unit
iDrive display, iDrive controller, amplifier, and CD player
Climate control panel
Start/stop button
Headlight switch
Accelerator pedal

Fault codes vary between scans, but the these falts are from the last scan:

48002C – ICM, ACC: Interface DSC
480AB8 – DSC Control Unit: Vehicle start with vehicle moving or driving condition unknown
CAAC0D – Signal (lid status, 0x2FC) invalid, transmitter BDC-ZGM/CAS
CD8E10 – LIN bus communication: Missing
D354F8 – No message (terminals, 0x12F), receiver DSC, transmitter CAS/FEM
D35A53 – Signal (actual steering angle, front axle, 57.1.2) invalid, transmitter ICM/EPS
E07C21 – No message (terminals, 0x12F), receiver camera-based driver support systems, transmitter FEM/FRM/CAS/BDC-ZGM
E07C28 – No message (continuous high beam assist status, 0x96), receiver camera-based driver support systems, transmitter FEM/FRM/BDC-ZGM

When monitoring terminal voltages in ISTA, I can see that Terminal 30B remains active. Terminal 15WUP receives a signal every time the relays click, which seems to coincide with the vehicle waking up.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue? Could a faulty FEM module be causing the vehicle to repeatedly wake up and prevent it from entering sleep mode?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
