Yes, that's what I thought too. I guess the cause must be deep in the gearbox and something that can't be fixed easily, and I assume that BMW wouldn't pay for a gearbox change unless they really thought it was necessary.
Latest news from my dealer is that the gearbox has to be ordered from Germany and should be here in 5 to 7 days. I'll report back on the results.
