They've been working on gesture input for at least a decade.
I remember when BMW used to have an emerging technologies part of their website, and gestures to move forward and back a track etc by waving a hand were being displayed on a 7.
Thought it was extremely cool back then, and still is. Glad to see it finally coming to fruition!
