I think the throttle body adaptation is more of a calibration routine to calibrate the MAF/throttle position sensor to each other, so it may be necessary after a CAI or similar install, but I never once needed to do it myself on my car. The tuning shop may have done it as part of flashing the tune the first time, but I never needed to take it back to them for that for any reason.
Yeah I mostly ran APR tunes and liked that feature as well. You are probably right about the details of the tba, I basically went through the process I laid about above with my chipped b5 A4 15+ years ago. Did the tba a few times and once I realized it was mostly in my head I didn't think about it much on my next three tuned cars.
