As far as I know, iDrive 4 only supports BMW Apps from iPhone, and iDrive 4++ is when they added Android USB support. I haven't been able to find clear answers, but I thought that is the difference between CIC and NBT (which do have very similar themes), and NBT only started rolling out in 2014 or so. I wasn't able to get any connection with a 2013 X3, for example.
Perhaps I'm just confused about the overlapping iDrive generations and factory coded features It sounds like it is free and quick to try, in any case.
