I also seriously doubt RWD is faster (or let's say more efficient in getting power to the wheels) in motion. It can be more fun and it can therefore build a placebo effect of being faster. Driving a well powered RWD can actually be scary (from own experience). XDrive is not (as) scary, as the car behaves and just goes.... but it goes quicker. Having good traction may not be as fun, but it certainly is increasing performance.
