It is not that much of a bother and ensures that all old the old oil and any gunge that may have accumulated in there is removed.

Well its messy, you need to get under the car, not every one has a jack. On F31 335d its super easy with an extraction pump as engine has a dipstick and filter housing is accessible from the top. Its 15 min job tops.
I agree, on cars that have filters accessible from underneath the car it makes sense to drain as you are going under anyway.
Also, if any gunge accumulates in the sump then I suspect oil changes are not frequent enough.
