Not sure about california laws, but I thought exhaust modifications were fine as long as the catalytic converter was in place? Otherwise my thoughts are you'd either need to get an OEM MPerformance exhaust, or possibly Dinan since they tend to go the extra step to make sure their parts are carb legal.
But, again, I'm feel like I see a lot of cali folks running aftermarket exhausts and I can't imagine why AWE would affect your emissions testing. Just keep the stock downpipe and you should be fine with any catback/axleback
