My 2012 328i just had this failure as well. I have a 6MT so nothing to do with the auto gearbox. I had it in Sport mode, it had been the entire hour long I had been driving it. I pulled out onto the highway and accelerated fairly hard as I got up into some higher RPMs all of a sudden it just gave out and started flashing error messages at me. Pulled over and it was idling all wrong and not willing to accelerate. Sounded like it was running on 3 cylinders.
It is interesting to note that I have had my car for well over a year and it has a bit of 20,000 miles on it and I have never seen this before. Going to call the dealer tomorrow and schedule an appointment.
