I think the long range on the road ebikes comes from the fact that the motors on ebikes cut out around 16mph (UK law I think) , so on the flat a normal rider will no doubt be peddling above that speed, which will mean you are purely on leg power, and the motor will only kick in when going up hill and your speeds drops below 16mph.

You can "chip" them to remove the speed limit, I have some e-mtb friends whose bikes will do 30mph on the flat, whereas when the motor cuts out on mine, its really hard to overcome the drag of the tyres and unpowered motor(progress has been made since I bought mine to decouple the motor when it cuts out so you are not turning it with your legs) to crack 17mph, and you find yourself cruising at 16 as it takes 3 times the effort to do 17mph!
