Let's make this abundantly clear: BMW is not your friend. They are out to protect themselves, not you.

A vacuum pump won't fix your problem, it'll just happen again. The solution is a new camshaft, necessitating a top end rebuild of a brand new engine design. Stock of camshafts, as of June when this happened to me, is almost 0 as the engine hasn't be around long enough for them to amass a back stock of spare parts. Ordering the part will take 21-28 days to arrive from Germany to the west coast of the US.

If this happens to you, I suggest requesting your dealer start the buy back process as soon as possible. BMWNA jerked me around for 3+ weeks claiming they were going to take care of me before bold facing lying on the 29th day that the car was fixed, and then being forced to give buyback when it wasn't.

I will file a complaint with NHTSA as well.
