I think an 8 speed in the 3 series is a no-brainer. Fuel economy standards are becoming very tough, and are stricter for small vehicles like the 3 series. If ZF is comparing fuel efficiency with a DCT, it is probably a dry clutch DCT. A dry clutch DCT is limited in the amount of torque it can handle. One is fitted to the VW GTI. Wet clutch DCT's as used by BMW don't have very good fuel economy due to pumping losses. Note that a 135i with DCT only gets an 18/25 EPA rating. However, I do like the way mine drives. I expect future use of the wet clutch DCT will be confined to low volume vehicles like M series or "is" models.
