My cheap plastic encased Escorts have lasted and lasted and lasted. Still have both of them and they are all in full working order (8500 from 2001 that I had upgraded by Escort for $75 in 2007 to an X50 and currently-in use-9500ix from 2014). They've been dropped, fallen off their mounts, and endured black on black interiors in the TX heat. Both of them still work perfectly.
Man, really wish I would've sprung for a V1 so I could have as-good or inferior protection and that magnesium case.

Not saying that. The v1 does have better range when a company that doesn't sell or isn't affiliated with one that sells detectors does the testing. I have a passport. The v1 crushes it in range. It also has the arrows which have helped too many tines to count. The magnesium case vs plastic is only a benefit when doing upgrades. I drop my passport same as you. The cheap upgrade vs buy a new one is a definite savings.
