For diesel engines I would recommend automatic, they are efficient, but boring, its better if an auto chooses the right RPM/gear.
Gasoline engines on the contrary with a wide RPM spectrum to use I would choose a manual.
My F11 diesel has an auto, works perfect. My supercharged 330ix have manual, and love that in that car :-)
