I think you misinterpreted what was said. It's not the physical object, its the new AT box that does the shifting. For all one cares, you can just put it in DS and let it shift, in fact you would probably slow it down with sloppy shifting.
And btw, not all F30 335i comes with the paddle shifters. I am not quite sure how you could have possibly gotten confused.
