I lived in New Hampshire for 3 years with a RWD 3 series and all-season tires. It got dicey some times, but certainly driveable (with appropriate care and caution, obviously).
I live in Boston now with a 335 Xdrive...

Thanks Matt. Quite honestly I've spent most of my life in the south away from snow. I'm leaning towards ordering a 335xi and keeping the 18" all-season tires on it. Even though I'm not going to love the way the 18's look with the raised ride height of the xdrive, I think it's ideal as "training wheels" for my purposes.
