You might want to practice plugging and unplugging the connector with the car off so you're not struggling with it with your head next to the exhaust pipe. It would probably help even more to jack the back left corner up before you get started.
The other method apparently has to do with pulling the fuse(s) associated with the flap. I haven't tried it myself.

Ok so I tried the steps above several times and I never felt exhaust gasses coming out of the driver's side pipe. Guess my solenoid is bad. I did a search and this seems to be a common issue. One of these days I'll pass by the dealer to have them check it out.
