i had a failed tensioner at 66k on 2012 320i it was releasing the tension after the engine had been turned off so when i started it the chain was very loose you could almost pull it off the cam.
i didn't get the chain replaced straight away but luckily when i did get it changed they found that the guide was coming apart and could have easily broken.
my previous car was an 05 E91 330i and that was on it's original chain and guide with 180k miles and the engine still sounded like new.
i think bmw tried to cut costs with the n20/n26 and it might be coming back to bite them in the end.
They changed to the B48 and i hear that is having issues aswell.
