I've had an E36, E46, E53, E70, and now the F30. One BMW or another has been my daily driver since 1995. The F30 is the only one that exhibits this weird behavior.
I don't think you've experienced it, otherwise you wouldn't say it's normal. It's really not. Even my E70 X5 35i with the exact same engine and transmission doesn't do it.
