Sounds like you were in the wrong gear at both times.
First run you shifted up too early and second run you were in 3rd gear below 60mph
And you let him hit the gas first both times.
As others have said, in a short race those two delays make a big difference in outcomes.
Take it to a 1/4 mile track for definitive proof...
Or if you insist on street racing go from a stop light leading to a highway, or if you want to do a roll race, agreed on the starting speed, let each person pick gearing and go to a higher speed
