Ok, I'd forgotten about them.....
WardsAuto, whose annual engine awards seem to be well respected both in the US and elsewhere, has included BMWs I-6 petrol engines in its "Wards 10 Best Engines" Trophy for 27 years in a row - the B58 was in the top 10 in 2016 and 2017. Nuff said
