This thread definitely went a bit sideways, I'm still reeling a bit from the comments.
To the main point: Sounds like not a huge brand consensus besides the general advice to stick to mainstream/busy stations. As a very small sample size study:
I've generally been getting around 40mpg (calculated) but used Safeway on my last fillup and saw around 37. Obviously lots of variables so I'm not claiming foul.
However I'm on a new tank with Shell, the fuel light isn't on yet and I'm at 560 miles on the tank. Pre-LCI x-drive wagon
