Wow, I didn't know that. I just tried to make a route in the US and indeed the site refuses to calculate a route or allow you to download it to a USB stick.

However if you make a route with several waypoints in Europe, you can download the file. It's a zip file with a tar.gz archive inside which has an XML document. There might be a chance to edit the file manually and insert waypoints in the US, and upload that file to the car. Not sure it would work as it seems the XML file has not only destinations but also a lot of waypoints along the route to force navigation to use a particular road. However a simple file with only a few destinations might simply trigger the car to navigate there.

If there's no other way, maybe that's a semi-manual workaround to get routes into the car.
