Two things. If a magic air filter could improve engine performance without impacting durability BMW would use one. If a less expensive air filter worked as well as what BMW currently uses they'd switch suppliers. If you think that saving seven bucks on a filter is a big deal consider that buying at cost BMW would probably save three bucks per filter. Multiply that by two million cars produced per year and that's six million dollars.
