I was mildly "unfriendly" to a tax guy at an online sales company today because I thought his reply to my question about why I got nailed for 10.25% sales tax for something purchased online when the state sales tax here is 6.25% was bullshit. He claimed because his company is in Chicago that I have to pay Chicago sales tax even though I'm way down state where the tax rate is lower. I've always thought you pay the tax rate where you live, not where the company is. In most cases, that's true. But if you and the company HQ are in the same state, you pay the tax rate of wherever the company is located. Since the company is based in Chicago, I got nailed. Just glad I don't live up there and pay that all the time. Zoiks.
So now I feel mildly guilty for telling him I thought it was bullshit, when he was actually right. Doh!!! Need to go do penance. I'll walk to the Verizon store to get my iPhone 7 instead of driving. That'll be penance enough.
