its time to change the spark plugs though, do I need to "upgrade" to a different set?

thanks
No. There’s really no such thing as a spark plug “upgrade” like there may be for other parts. BMW engineers choose the optimum spark plug and gap for the engine to run its best. Actually changing that has a bigger chance of the engine actually running worse!

Stock spark plugs and gap are usually perfect for Stage1, Stage2 tunes, etc. Only really aggressive engine mods and really high boost levels might change the cylinder environment enough to require a different plug or a different gap. A good mechanic can remove and “read” the appearance of the plug to know if it’s running efficiently or not.
