There are nuanced differences between render, rendering, and rendition, and it seems automobile journalists have chosen the most appropriate word to describe a photoshopped picture. I sometimes see artist "rendition" used in the caption and "rendering" used in the copy, so it's still slippery. That's probably why some people are confused. "Render" is not correct though.
