When you have about 10mb free space, you likely have already a bootanimation with about 10-15mb installed.
So installing a bootanimation with below 20mb free space should be no issue as the old file will be overwritten.
Without root access the folder does appear empty although it is not.
if you want to check that folder content you need to root your unit, install total commander, set it to "root everywhere" at settings then you can see the content of where the bootanimation is.
You also can delete the bootanimation then if you want to get sure you have enough space.
If you don`t use preinstalled splash.img files you can also delete mylogo.zip which has the factory settings bootlogos , this also does free you additional ~2MB.

I can't install new boot logo instead default, android doesn't want accept flashdrive with bootlogo, factory_settings was accepted, i did video
OTA 2.1.0, in bmwclub.ru some peoples has same issue with bootlogo
