You don't need to have the wifi option to send directions to car for example, just connected drive. You can check what options are available and/or active for your car at bmw's connected drive website. Also a way to pay to activate them of course.
I thought about it and figured it was probably extra charge anyway as internet access via the infotainment is extra charge. Adding wifi hot spot to your car likely costs extra similar to some cellphone plans charging extra for tethering, though many include a tethering allowance.
