We actually planted a lot of our yard with hummers in mind. I don't like feeder shots either, but they will rest on the nearby branches and that is where I try to get them. I know you know this, but a resting perch near the feeder should be placed so that the background is blue sky or green foliage. That makes for super bokeh.
