That is part of their diagnostic procedure. The service manager told me this is how they proved to the agent of my extended warranty, which was third party, that the transfer case was already defective at 54k miles. I was also advised to get a square set-up for my wheels and tires if I want my transfer case to last longer this time around. I'm not taking any chances.
