Make sure you have an Apple cable since that often is the cause. Then just leave the phone connected for an extended period see if it eventually connects.

+1 for quality cable, I use a Belkin certified cable (mainly because it is black) on my CIC car and have not had any issues. I do find that the USB port in the glove box temperamental.
