I've scrapped prob 10 - 15 cats from E30/E36/E34/E39s. That's not the point. Getting $75 - $125 for a 60,000 mile E34 540i cat from a scrapper vs. selling them to an enthusiast who needs to pass smog for $800 is worlds difference. OE MSRP is close to $1,500 A SIDE, even today. I have sold cats from these cars to local shops when I parted or upgraded and have made significant return vs. scrapping (or gutting the cat).

My point is that the BMW cat is less valuable to a scrapper than as a whole to a person needing said cat.
Fair points, understand where you are coming from on the value thing. Thats why I bought a catless downpipe instead of gutting mine

Apparently OP is in a unique situation where he is positive he wont need his ever again.

For most, the $200 spent on a catless is a wise move (and save OEM cat).
